It is incontestable that ARGENS is one of the most ancient villages in Haute Provence. Its name is probably of Celtic origin.

In the past it was a flourishing village, having more than 300 inhabitants in 1717, but its population has rapidly decreased. In 1973 it became “associated” with the commune of La Mure.

The original village, situated where the cemetery is today, was destroyed by the Visigoths around 588. The legend goes that the Templars took it over and were expelled first by the Saracens then later by a Cathar sect from Albi.
