LA MURE-ARGENS is an “association” of two communes made only in 1973, but the two villages have no common history.
Situated two kilometres from Saint Andre les Alpes, LA MURE stands on the left bank of the river Issole at its confluence with the river Verdon, where the valley gets wider and there are vast green open spaces.
La Mure’s architectural unity is remarkable, as it nestles in the calming mountain environment.
Its name comes from the word “Moracius”, meaning “hard-shelled walnut”. The monks of Saint Victor of Marseilles named it when they founded an abbey here in the 11th Century.
