The village of MORIEZ stretches along the road at the foot of the Col des Robines and its curious black marl. The houses are piled one upon the other in the narrow streets in one of the oldest villages in the region. The early occupation of this territory is no doubt due to the strategic position of the Col des Robines and the agricultural potential of the extensive well-situated rolling countryside at its foot.
Two polished stone axes from the Neolithic period 2000 to 3000 years BC found in the village, indicate that it was in existence well before the Christian era. When the Romans arrived they established a military post here and called it Muria, though it was previously called Coullet de Ville.
